History of Ringwood, NJ

The town sits among the Ramapo Mountains. In the 16th century, it was recognized to have large amounts of iron ore. It was founded in 1740 by the Ogden family of Newark. The town became known for its iron “plantations” manufacturing furnaces for farmers. In 1771, a manager of the iron company, Robert Erskine, was commissioned by George Washington to help design maps and survey the land. Later on, in the Civil War, the town used its iron supplies for guns and ammunition. A railroad was built in town in the 1880’s bringing more business and people. The town is a beautiful, naturally preserved area that has been an important part of our N.J. history.
