History of Mine Hill, NJ
Now a thriving suburban community, Mine Hill was once a active mining centre, with the first mining occurring in the early 1700s. The Dickerson Mine was owned and operated by Malhorn Dickerson, New Jersey’s 12th Governor (1815-1817) and Secretary of the US Navy (1834-1838) and his family, and was the largest iron ore mine in the area. The mine supplied much of the ore used during the Revolutionary War period. At one time the township boasted some of the richest iron ore mines in the country. The last of the mines closed during the late 1960s.
