History of Florham Park, NJ
Florham Park was first settled by the English between 1680 and 1700, and was long recognized as prime farming area. The community was also known for the manufacture of quality brooms and, through its history, was known as Hoppingtown, Broomtown, Columbia, and Afton. How did Florham Park get its interesting name? In 1887, Florence and Hamilton Twombly built their 840 acre country estate in this Morris County countryside and named their estate “Florham”, a combination of their first names. The second part to the name “Florham Park” was derived from another 1000 acre estate in town owned by Dr. Leslie Ward that was called “Brooklake Park” partially because of the beautiful lake on the property. These two families successfully petitioned the State of New Jersey to create their own town, and on March 20, 1899, the Governor signed the bill, finally making “Florham Park” a borough.
